Saturday’s Reflection
IN THE BEST of all possible worlds, faith’s witnesses could participate in a “witness protection program.” You could freely speak your word in testimony to God’s transforming power and know that if it created any waves you would be whisked away to a “safe house.” There you could peaceably live in anonymity, free of reprisals from the powers that be — ecclesial, political, or social.
However, faith’s witness is never anonymous because it comes from particular individuals and groups who live within and speak to particular locales and situations. As a result, faith’s witness is never without risk; the goal is not safety but transformation. God does not give us false identities to disguise our voice or cloak who we truly are. God beckons us to trust the word of “do not be afraid” and then bids us speak as witnesses to the holy in life.
