Transfiguration Sunday
TRANSFIGURATION. Jesus’ clothes became dazzling white. His face shone — in Matthew’s words, “like the sun.” Moses and Elijah appeared. A voice spoke from a cloud. Something happened on that mountain. But what . . . and why?
The Greek word used by the Gospels of Mark and Matthew to describe this event is metamorphoo, from which we get our word metamorphose. The language and details of the story suggest that what happens to Jesus on the mountain involves inward as well as outward change. . . .
Prayer and transformation belong together. When we enter into God’s presence and open our lives to the possibilities of God, things, change. We change — not magically but spiritually. The connection between the change manifested on the Mount of Transfiguration and the change God would bring to our lives is not sleight of hand, or smoke and mirrors, or illusions that fool the eye. Change crafted by God intends to turn life and heart around.
