Wake-Up Call

Thursday’s Reflection

OUR TRAVEL [on our Lenten journey] begins with a reality check on Ash Wednesday. Surprisingly, we find that we are mere mortals. We live, and we die. Our mortality is a stark reality. Then we remember that Jesus triumphed over death, and the road somehow levels out.

As the 40-day journey continues, we face a road increasingly filled with potholes as we are called to face and let go of our personal and corporate sinfulness. Side trips beckon, and we are reminded of the temptations that Jesus faced. We are no different. We too have been tempted and, as frail humans, too often have succumbed to the temptations of the world. The question Jesus asked of the disciples in Gethsemane, in his hour of greatest need, continues to ring true for all of us. “Why are you sleeping?” Lent calls us to wake up.
