Healing Joy

Friday’s Reflection

IF YOU’RE LIKE ME, memories of certain places in your life make your feet feel good. I think of the hot concrete outside the Vandalia Dairy Queen; the cool kitchen linoleum of a friend’s house; the grass of the park; … the gritty texture of the beach at vacation spots and the shock of the waves when I first waded in. Sometimes as a teenager I offered to run errands for my parents, partly to be helpful but partly to be out and about with nothing on my feet. . . .

We adults usually don’t set forth from our homes barefooted with the goal of a fun-filled day. But I still like to go barefoot when I feel a little silly and also when I’m feeling sad or bored or need to change my perspective. . . . When I’m older, I know I won’t regret the silly, spur-of-the-moment joys that bring a kind of healing.
