Saturday’s Reflection
SATURDAY MORNINGS we did it right. The rest of the week we ate stale cereal. But Saturdays, two of us got up early and prepared a feast: pancakes, eggs, home fries, bacon, pastries. This week it was my turn, and my co-chef and I frantically scrambled eggs, flipped bacon…, set out plates and silverware. Soon fifteen young men with tired and hungry faces began lining up to fill their plates.
We were drug addicts, gang members, con artists; we’d been sent to this program by the courts, by hurt parents, or perhaps by the hand of Providence….
I think that the household of God is a bit like this breakfast enjoyed by troubled young men in a boarding school. We were a ragtag bunch of imperfect people with God as the head of our household. Not a domineering Lord who exacts vengeance for our faults, but a compassionate God/Parent who accepts junkies and compulsive liars and other difficult people into God’s home.
