Saturday’s Reflection
THE THEOLOGIAN Jürgen Moltmann is known for his theology of hope. “The Christian hope is directed . . . toward a new creation of all things by the God of the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (Theology of Hope, page 33). We may direct our hope toward this new creation, but we also hope in the present, thereby nurturing goodness. This is no small thing, to nurture goodness in a world seemingly gripped by continual fear. Multiple channels of twenty-four-hour news feed us the same bad news over and over. We can easily become convinced that nothing good is going on. …
How do we daily testify to God’s goodness and to the beauty of God’s creation?
…Christianity seems to operate best when it is in a defensive posture; that is, we live in the spirit of the apology: that gentle and reverent explanation of the good that orders our lives and of the hope that is within us. The resurrection of Jesus Christ and God’s promise of the new creation are excellent places to begin our defense against fear with God’s counternarrative of hope.
