Remembering

Monday’s Reflection

A FOURTH PART of the growing-through-grieving process is remembering. To learn to live again entails spending time remembering what has been lost. We have all retold our stories of loss. Sometimes we think we must be boring other people because we can’t seem to stop telling our stories. We tell anyone who will listen—stranger or friend— as we try to come to terms with the absence of someone important to us. Remembering is such a continuous process because significant losses are a loss to the whole self. They affect the mind, heart, body, and soul. …

Remembering is also a way of creating a memorial. Humans create memorials to powerful experiences of passion. Memorials must represent the magnitude of the experience. …To do this, we have to go over the plans many times to find something (inadequate and impotent as it might be) that represents the fullness of the experience.

Today’s Question

Today is Memorial Day in the USA. What will you do to remember those who lost their lives while serving our country? Your action may be as simple as offering a prayer for the families of those who have lost a loved one in war. If you have lost someone close to you in the past year, think of something you can do to honor that person. Perhaps you could plant a tree or flower, write a poem, paint a picture, donate to a charity, or put a flower on someone’s grave. If you know someone who is grieving, reach out to that person today. Share your reflections.
