Remembering the Forgotten

Sunday’s Reflection

“THEY FORGOT WE WERE THERE.” That’s how one young boy tried to make sense of a senseless, interminable wait on the hard benches of an intake center for homeless families where he and his siblings and grandmother waited to learn where they could sleep that night. The overwhelmed workers at the intake center may have forgotten he was there. The comfortably housed residents of his city may have forgotten he was there. All across our nation we may have been unaware that he was there. But God didn’t forget.

God gives ear to the despairing words of our nation’s [the United States'] 13.3 million poor children. God heeds the sighs of our nation’s more than 200,000 who are homeless each night. . . . Isn’t it time for us, God’s people, to do the same?

Dear God, I turn to you in prayer confident that you hear me — even that you know my thoughts before they are spoken. Unstop my ears and attune my heart to hear the cries of the children and, hearing, to respond with the love and justice you desire. Amen.
