First Fruits

Friday’s Reflection

PRAISE FOR LENGTHY DAYS, blades of new-mown grass
and honeysuckle hanging heavy in humid dusk,
homegrown tomato slices glistening like dew,
and barbeque smoking on the grill. . . .

In every season,
our prayers rise as incense before you, O God;
our mouths melt morsels of yeasty wheat,
our tongues taste tangy fruit,
full-bodied and full orbed,
for our salvation and for the sake of the world.
