Trust and Freedom

Saturday’s Reflection

“TRUST AND FREEDOM are at the heart of a joyful reliance on God. Work, prayer, and
humility can help us to reclaim joyful hope—that wide-awake attentiveness to God
and the world. All this is illustrated for me by a German art postcard I picked up
once in a gift shop. In this dreamlike painting, a tightrope walker steps out into the
night sky, heading, it seems, straight for the full moon ahead. One end of the rope is
attached to the roof beam of the house that the walker has just left; the other end is
held lightly aloft in his hands, attached to nothing at all.

Our journeys of faith, it seems to me, are just like that. We respond to the call of
God by stepping out, one graced step at a time, into a luminous darkness. Our direction
is clear, but the route reveals itself only as we put one foot in front of the other. We cannot know beforehand exactly where we are heading or how we will get there.
Nevertheless we trust in God to show us—and to be for us—the way.”
