Psalm 42

Wednesday’s Reflection

Psalm 42 in My Own Words

Lori Scott

My heart cries out to you, O God.
Night and day, I pray, pouring out my soul,
languishing in my sorrow,
feeding on my tears and bitter memories.
I feel so painfully alone that even my bones ache.
Then I remember hope,
and I ask myself, Why do I dwell on the negative?
Why do I let unhappiness rule my life?

Instead, I will focus on you, O God,
because I know you are the one who will always comfort me.
I will remember your faithful blessings and kindness.
I will relish the beauty of your creation and let it nourish my soul.
I will celebrate how your love blazes through my life like the sun
and remember how it guides my steps by day
and pulses through my veins at night.
I will not dwell on the negative.
I will not let unhappiness rule my life.
I will put my hope in you, O God,
because I know you are the one who will always comfort me.

Tips for Your Spirit:
Personalizing Scripture: Sometimes we can personalize a passage of scripture by placing our own name in it. Some passages lend themselves to becoming personal prayers as we make ourselves the recipients of God’s Word. Try the practice, Personalizing scripture.
