Wednesday’s Reflection
From the first time you meet Jim and Nancy, you know they have been sweethearts for a very long time. A former athlete, he is a gentleman who still opens the door for her. She is a beauty whose eyes twinkle at the sight of him. They met in college and have been married for fifty-five years. The truth is, their love story is better than any made-for-TV movie. . . .
During the past few years, Nancy’s mind has begun to wander into the murky fog of an Alzheimer’s-like dementia. . . .
Over the last year Nancy’s condition has deteriorated. Her dependence on Jim and others increases as her memory slips, Still with the help of family and friends, Jim and Nancy adapt to the ever-changing landscape of dementia.
For as long as I can remember, Nancy has sung alto in the church choir. More than a decade ago, when I was still in the choir, I often sat beside Nancy during rehearsals. We’d giggle together when the basses came in a measure too early. Today Jim faithfully brings her to choir rehearsals where she sits between two choir members who act as her guardian angels, assisting her when needed. Each Sunday morning, she dons a choir robe and sings with a joyful heart as best she can. . . .
Certainly these sunset years are not easy for the pair. No matter what the future holds, their faith is strong. Jim knows that one day the vibrant woman Nancy used to be will be fully released in the presence of God. Until then and forever more, she remains the light of his life.
Prayer
Merciful God,
I am thankful for a long life filled with the love of a companion. When unexpected trials seem to swallow my joy, keep my eyes on you, knowing there will be a better tomorrow. Let me love with your love. Make me strong with your strength. Give me eyes to see beyond this day to eternity. Amen.

Today’s Question
If you are a caregiver for a family member or loved one, this reflection is meant to encourage you and help you rely on God’s strength to make it through your daily challenges. If you know a caregiver, pray for that person and think about how you might be able to help; whether by sitting with the loved one for a while so the caregiver can get out, sending a card, making a phone call, or doing something to brighten the caregiver’s day. Share your reflections.
