Awakening Prayer

Thursday’s Reflection

PRAYER UPON AWAKENING has always been part of Christian devotion. We center our early attention on God. We thank God for giving us another day to live, and we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in the living of it. We recommit ourselves to be instruments of God’s peace. Prayers upon awakening ignite our gratitude and focus our resolve. . . .

Upon awakening…, say:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear God, I rise from my bed of sleep to adore your holy name, to live for you this day, to work with you in the building of your kingdom, and to find in you eternal life. In the name of the Father, son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

. . . Conclude this time by praying:
Come, Holy Spirit. Be my guide and guardian of all my ways. Fill me anew with yourself that I may manifest your fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Amen.

Today’s Question

If you are a caregiver for a family member or loved one, this reflection is meant to encourage you and help you rely on God’s strength to make it through your daily challenges. If you know a caregiver, pray for that person and think about how you might be able to help; whether by sitting with the loved one for a while so the caregiver can get out, sending a card, making a phone call, or doing something to brighten the caregiver’s day. Share your reflections.
