The Winds of Cross-Purposes

Friday’s Reflection

BECOMING SERIOUS about our pilgrimage inevitably means being swept by the winds of cross-purpose. Mindfulness presents a conundrum of contradictions both to faith and to non-faith. Existence is framed in polarities-birth and death, health and disease, happiness and tragedy, crucifixion and resurrection. Thus Christian faith is without strength unless marinated in doubt, nudged by uncertainties, and tested for endurance by the difficult odds of the wager. At soul depth, we Christians are Lenten people, ash-marked pilgrims trudging a road with death’s cross as the only certain marker, driven by a yearning for more beyond, above, below, nevertheless, yet.
