Finding God in Books

Wednesday’s Reflection

I LOOK FOR GOD in books. I’ve always loved to read, and now I write; so books are my natural element, like air for butterflies. Sometimes, God’s presence in a book is obvious. Other times God is hiding. Sometimes authors don’t want God to be part of the story; but they can’t help writing about human nature, redemption, and creation.

C. S. Lewis, who wrote The Chronicles of Narnia, was an atheist before he became a Christian. He said, “A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading.” God, who spoke the world into being and who speaks to us through a book, likes words and gets into them in all sorts of ways. . . .

The best thing is that when God shows up in a book, God is always greater than the book. God transforms us with words.
